Pleasure and Pain

Jeremy Hurtt•

a scent of god that's never far

Beneath the bridge where time forgets,Echoes writhe in shadows' nets. The endless mouths of need converge,Kingdoms birthed within the purge. Each breath a hymn to endless night,A sacrifice to fading light.Immortal truths betray the grind,Whose winds dissolve the sands of time.
The void they bear, the lack they share,The fruit of all lies hidden there. The grit, the filth, the human stain,All washed away where waters wane.
Pleasure and painFire betrayedStumbling on stonesThat I myself laidSoon comes the dawnMy path is all doneAnd I wish that I hadAnother to comeThe piper's been paidA pauper's remainsOf pleasure and pain
Underneath the scars and sin,Speaks a spark the saints suspendEach act a key, a door ajar,A scent of god that's never farAt the edge of His embrace,The infinite, endless, final phaseParts lips and breath, by flesh and bone,Suspects the self we're all alone.
To rise, to fall, to bloom, to bleed,The soul must sever, fate must feed.To stand, to kneel, to take, to give,The pair of gifts you can't forgive.
Pleasure and painFire betrayedStumbling on stonesThat I myself laidSoon comes the dawnMy task is all doneAnd I wish that I hadAnother to comeThe piper's been paidA pauper's remainsOf pleasure and pain The ground is all grayedAnd shall feed this dayOf pleasure and pain
